OUR STORY
Ma’s Oasis was founded by Alice Tang who wanted to help mothers heal physically and mentally from childbirth through traditional Chinese postpartum meals. She noticed a lack of post-birth care for mothers as parents oftentimes focus more on their newborn. Alice wants to show mothers that they are just as important on this journey.
Why Chinese postpartum meals? Well, this idea was inspired by Alice’s own experience practicing Zuo Yue Zi, or Chinese Postpartum Confinement. In October of 2023, Alice went through an exhausting 40 hours of induced labor that resulted in an emergency Cesarean section (C-section). As you can imagine, she was in immense pain and discomfort after this birthing experience. Thankfully, Alice’s family had prepared for her confinement and began the practice when she arrived home.
Alice followed the traditions of Zuo Yue Zi such as staying warm, not showering, and most importantly, eating fresh and well-balanced meals that were packed full of nutrients. Within a week of being at home, her incision and back pain began to go away and her mood improved as well. She also saw an increase in her milk production and felt refreshed and energized even though she had sleepless nights. Alice believes it was the result of her nutritious postpartum meals and wanted to share this healing experience with other moms.
At Ma’s Oasis, we understand that caring for a newborn can be extremely difficult and taxing. Mothers tend to forget to take care of themselves during this post-birth period so we’re here to help them have one less thing to worry about.
MEET THE CHEFS
Alice's amazing aunt and uncle, Mrs. Jiang and Mr. Tang, have been chefs their entire lives. From attending culinary school to working at top restaurants in China, they found their love for cooking. Fun fact, Mrs. Jiang and Mr. Tang actually met when they were both working as chefs at the same restaurant!
Mrs. Jiang has been a chef for over 25 years and attended culinary school in China at the age of 20. She then worked as a sous chef for 10 years before becoming a Yuesao (月嫂), or Postpartum Nanny. During her time in China, she prepared many confinement meals for her family and for mothers. She learned and understood what meals were beneficial for certain needs and found ways to make them flavorful, yet light and healthy. After moving to America in 2017, she has not stopped her passion for cooking and preparing delicious meals.
Mr. Tang has been a chef for over 30 years and attended culinary school at the age of 17. He worked his way up to become head chef at a 4-star hotel when he graduated culinary school in China. After moving to America, he joined Henry’s Cuisine, a Michelin guide restaurant, as a saucier chef. So that delicious flavor you taste at Henry’s? Mr. Tang is the mastermind behind it all. Even a few of Henry’s famous dishes were created by Mr. Tang. Another fun fact! Henry's Cuisine is co-owned by Alice's dad so you can say that her family is pretty well-versed in the culinary industry.
